San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus Presents Magnificat—
June 12, 2010—Concert Times 2:00 PM & 8:00 PM

San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, under the baton of Dr. Kathleen McGuire, celebrating her tenth anniversary at the podium, joins forces with the San Francisco Girls Chorus Alumnae to present a concert of unrivalled quality and beauty: Magnificat — Saturday, June 12, 2010 — Concert times 2PM & 8PM.

In Act 1

SFGMC showcases moving highlights from the run-away-successful California Freedom Tour as well as the hauntingly exquisite Lux aurumque performed by Vocal Minority, and Gabrielle’s Oboe by The Lollipop Guild. The men’s set concludes with Thou Lord Our Refuge (the first piece ever to be publicly performed by the Chorus – on the steps of City Hall the night of the Milk/Moscone assassinations), Material Madrigal, and the anthemic Never Ever from Naked Man. Then the boys make way for the girls as the Alumnae of the San Francisco Girls Chorus take the stage to present the angelic Dona Nobis Pacem and works both moving and rousing by, amongst others, Claude Debussy, and ending with the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and Over The Rainbow.

In Act II

These world renowned choruses join forces to present, arguably, one of the most beautiful choral works ever composed, John Rutter’s Magnificat. The work combines soaring male and female voices with a sumptuous orchestral arrangement. Rutter told 60 Minutes that he was not particularly a religious man, yet still deeply spiritual and inspired by the sacred verses.

Old First is a venue well known to music lovers.

The gorgeous acoustics make this one of San Francisco’s pre-eminent venues for classical repertoire. This concert is essential for all lovers of glorious song.
